What’s In My Hospital Bag?

12/19/2021

This will be my 4th time packing for the Hospital and I feel by this point I’ve figured out a good balance of necessities and fun extras. To keep my mind from going crazy with an overwhelming list, I’ve broken down my list into 5 categories: Baby, Technology, Entertainment, Me and Luxury. And as a photographer Mama, I have a few extra items I’ve included that you may find interesting. Let’s dive in!

Is there anything sweeter than packing for a Baby? Fynn and I have enjoyed finding out the gender of our babes, and this time round we know we are having a sweet baby boy. Since this is boy # 3, we have a few favourite items that we have saved from big brothers Wess and Becks, that our new little guy will get to enjoy (like the navy, fleece suit above!).

When I was pregnant with Wess, I invested in a gorgeous cognac, leather diaper bag by StorkSak and let me tell you – it was WORTH THE INVESTMENT! It has been used almost daily over the past 5 years and has very little wear showing. I have packed it full of long-sleeved onsies, tiny pants, cozy sleepers, diapers, wipes, moisturizer, bum cream, my ring sling, booties, socks.. all the goodies!

I have also packed a white posing swaddle and a white linen throw – two items that I will use while taking some Fresh 48 pictures of my new little man!

Although I am a film and digital photographer, I am giving myself some grace and only bringing my digital equipment with me to the hospital. I love to travel light, so all I am bringing with me is my Canon 5D Mark IV, 24-70mm lens, 100mm macro lens, Expo Disc (for white balance), charged batteries, empty SD and CF Cards and my laptop.

My laptop will fit in my suitcase and my camera equipment will all fit in my travel camera bag that I bought many, many years ago from Ona Bags. I usually like to bring my reflector kit to Fresh 48 sessions, but since I am trying to travel light, I can use the white linen throw I packed to diffuse any harsh light.

It has been a LOOONG time since I have sat down and read a book. And since I am delivering babe at the very beginning of 2022, Covid-19 protocols are still in place at our local Hospital. This means that I won’t be flooded with friends and family stopping by to meet our new little man. This breaks my heart, but it does give me an opportunity to dive into a good read.

At the moment I’m bringing When Less Becomes More by Emily Ley. It’s a book I pull out every 6 months or so to do a check-in with myself and make sure I’m prioritizing the right parts of my life. However, I am up for a good new read, so if you have any book suggestions, let me know!

I will also be bringing a few dvd’s to watch on my laptop for some guilty and mindless entertainment 🙂

This one feels so natural to assemble, I mean, I’ve been packing for myself for a long time now! In my suitcase I’ve packed makeup, skin-care, essential toiletries, hair-care, soft sweatpants, nursing t-shirts, pjs, maternity undies (my favs are from Old Navy – super cheap and sooo comfy!), cozy socks, etc. Have I forgotten anything important? Gosh I hope not!

This one is 100% optional, but there are two things I am bringing that feel like total luxuries. First up – slippers. Yup, totally worth it! I know I will be walking with that sweet little boy of mine tucked in my ring sling and having fluffy slippers with soles will make it so much more enjoyable.

The second item is a beautiful silk robe that I purchased for my #lcpclientcloset. It will add a feminine, romantic look to my Fresh 48 self portraits. And after hours of exhausting labour, who wouldn’t want to take a hot shower and slip into a silky robe to snuggle a sweet newborn?

That’s it! I know it sounds like a lot, but everything will fit into 3 bags: a suitcase, a diaper bag and my travel camera bag. Does my list include any of your must-haves? Do you have any must-haves that you think I would love? Tell me in the comments below!
